Un-vaccinated child with Whooping Cough Posted: 13 May 08 9:32 AM |

| Please can anyone give me advice. My first child had most of his vaccinations but always suffered minor health problems so I decided not to vaccinate my 2nd child although he did have a couple of doses of tetanus and polio. He is now 10 and attends a mainstream school. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure he has picked up Whooping Cough. I have been to the doctor 3 times who thinks it is very unlikely but today he has definitely started to whoop when coughing. I've kept him off school for a couple of days but my major worry is that there are 2 families in his class with new babies (less than 2 weeks old) and he has been quite close to one of them in the playground a few days ago. I don't know whether to warn the parents or wait until I've seen the doctor again. I'm so worried that he could have passed the illness to the baby or to someone else in the school. Also I don't know whether to own up to the fact that he has not been vaccinated. I don't think that most people know although it might have been included on school paperwork at some point. Sorry to go on but I am so worried I have not been able to think about anything else for 2 days. Anyone considering not vaccinating do give some thought to how you would feel in this situation when making your decision. Although I still feel in my heart it was the right thing to do if I could change my decision now I probably would. |

Hi Roxy,
All my kids were disgnosed with whooping cough two years ago, including Eloise who was two weeks old at the time. I have written about it on the site but never got round to finishing the story.
Whooping cough is quiet common amoung vaccinated children according to a study published in the BMJ in 2006, in fact if the hospital had not done the swab test and confirmed the diagnosis on Eloise I would not have know she had the infection it was so mild. GPs assume if the child has been vaccinated they dont get it so strong is their faith in vaccinations. The BMJ advice to GPs was persistent cough over two weeks always thing whooping cough.
I am sure the fact Eloise was being breast fed and having chiropractic care made a huge difference.. If you e-mail me with any questions I will try to help. richard@familychiropractic.co.uk dont beat yourself up about it. I do whats best for my own children and getting infections strengthens their immune systems according to the scientific evidence and my own experience. |

| Hi Roxy,
I'm in a similar position as you but my little boy is 14 months old and he is currently affected with Whooping Cough. He is unvaccinated but his 3 year old brother is partially vaccinated ie. 5 in 1 but no MMR. As I take my eldest to nursery school every day of course the baby comes with us and I am very aware of the tiny infants around us. It's worrying me more than my son being poorly! I know deep down, like yourself that I made the right decision to not vaccinate, but feel like I am facing the first consequences - guilt! |
