protest or lie low?
Posted: 11 Sep 08 8:29 AM

My (unvaccinated) son brought home from school today a letter from the Health Protection Agency about cases of measles in our locality, urging parents to get unvaccinated children the MMR. I am a bit annoyed about it , firstly because it cites two deaths from measles since 2006, failing to mention that at least one of those was in a child taking immunosuppressive drugs. (Anyone know anything about the other case?) It also mentions side-effects of measles, including SSPE, which would frighten anyone--it frightens me--but fails to point out that any vaccine including measles can also cause side-effects.
I can't decide whether I should formally comment on this in some way, or whether discretion is the better part of valour and I should lie low. My own very enlightened GP, who is not anti-vaccine, has respected my wishes not to vaccinate, but I don't want to tempt fate and draw attention to myself so some other official can get on my case; on the other hand, if no one ever complains about the partial way these issues are put to anxious parents, non-vaccinating parents will always be seen as a bonkers minority--and perhaps pressure to vaccinate may one day turn into coercion.
Anyone any suggestions as to what they would do in this situation?
