dear sara, i am a 37-year-old mother of three, partly vaccinated. I grew up in Austria and did get DT and polio, but not MMR. I had measles, I had mumps and all sorts of other things, never suffered any side affects - i believe the issue with complications is partly that people don't respect their own body needs rest and time to heal itself, if you send your kids to the playgrounds when they are sick with measles, no wonder they will get complications! also, most people will stuff their kids full of calpol and similar so the body never gets a chance to does what it is so good at - fight bacteria and viruses! more than 10 years ago, when my daughter was only little, i went to measles parties almost every other week to get her body to contract the illness... believing that it was necessary she has it. she never got it, probably because she has antibodies already? i have read somewhere that in many childhood diseases, the kid doesn't ever show symptoms, many do get it anyway, but don't develop a rash or it is mistaken for something else. i have decided not to do any vaccinations anymore - the u-turn came with our last baby last year when i looked into the issue more and nobody (and believe me, i asked many people, including well-respected doctors) could give me proof that the vaccination will actually better their position. no field trials are being done on vaccines so why would i inject my baby with mercury and other nasties that would way pass the limit that is considered safe even for an adult without having evidence that this will give them any form of protection? the illnesses childhood vaccines are meant to combat or protect from are actually nothing worrying at all, in fact, i felt that every time my kids had one of them, they had done a big leap in terms of their development - they just seemed healthier and more grown-up overall, this might not make any sense, but that's the only way i can describe it. i really think that if you look after your body (healthy eating, moderate exercise, fresh air...) it is very able to fend off any nasties or deal with an illness accordingly... and work with the disease, supporting the healing process as millions of people have done throughout history - these are the best prerequisites for surviving anything life throws at you!
