Antibiotics for a Newborn Baby
Posted: 28 Mar 07 1:10 PM

Hello,

When my son was just 48 hours old, he was diagnosed with an Umbical Flare and was given Intra Venous Antibiotics for 48 hours. Generally I do not agree with the use of antibiotics or any medications but at the time I was feeling so exhaused and emotional especially as it was my first baby and doctors told me it could be very serious and he could die if not treated with antibiotics, so I agreed for him to have the treatment.

He is now 5 months old, not vaccinated and fully breastfed, but I am worried the antibiotics may have had/or be having lasting adverse affects.

Does anyone know if this could be the case? Is there anything I can do to correct any imbalances he may now have as a result?

Thank you

There are infant pro-biotic cultures (I think UDO's do one) which can be given to the child to restore any floral imbalance resulting from the anti-biotics, although I would imagine they are best given during or directly after the treatment. I would often recommend it to parents whose children get antibiotics for ear infections (unfortunately still the treatment of choice here in Ireland despite the low sucess rateand otherwise causing upset to child and creating even more virulent bacterial strains!)
