Unvaccinated children

As with some of the other postings, I just thought I would share my story so far with all those newer parents who may be doubting. I keep my fingers crossed that my children will get to old age without anything nasty coming along as a result of their 'terrible' mother not having them vaccinated, but I know in my heart its the right thing for my sons. I try to keep reading up on the subject, but I remain unconvinced that my children would be safer having had them. I had my first son (now 7) vaccinated. My husband had to get the 2nd and 3rd set of DTP's done as my gut feeling told me it was very wrong and we agreed that maybe he should do it instead. At 11 months, he developed pneumonia for no reason that I could see and so after he was treated homeopathically, I finally 'saw the light' and he won't be having any more vaccines. He has been very healthy ever since and rarely has even a sniffle. He had chicken pox at 5, and that passed without ceremony but with lots of spots! I became more informed as time went on. When I had my second son (now 3)I knew straight away that he wouldn't even be having DTP. My health visitor just took my viewpoint on board and didn't challenge me. I sense she knew. My doctor was the same, though he did try to talk me around with reasons for tetanus (he had just heard a pensioner had died of it after a weekend on his allotment) and measles (where the doctor had worked in Africa and seen it do its worst). It seemed to me that in both of these cases, the people concerned were all immuno-compromised. So my son had no jabs. At three months, he had chicken pox and at 6 months had mumps - both of them passed quickly without incident. (My eldest son didn't catch mumps from his little brother.) With the support of a homeopath, I looked after him the way my mother had looked after me when I had them as a child; kept me comfortable, rested and cared for. He is now a very robust little boy - 100th percentile in fact. So what I know from my experiences so far is that as a parent, from when they are first babies, YOU and ONLY YOU can make decisions for them. YOU have to read and understand what you are giving them and feel satisfied with that. We all do it with food labelling and vaccines are no different. It is a huge, gut-wrenching responsibility and a steep learning curve but it goes with the territory. Just trusting what others say without satisfying yourself that you understand as much as you can, is not the way to a good night's sleep. Now I feel a lot more confident with caring for my sons, whether its a fall-over, a tummy bug, sniffles. I feel more tuned-in to what they need rather than trying to paper-over the symptoms with fever or sickness with calpol or similar. What a great website! Thanks.

Great to hear that you are not covering up symptoms with calpol, etc. It is an unhealthy culture, I think, and will take away a mother's intuition and art of caring properly for her children.
